The image below was made with the help of masking. Basically, on top of the lighting in the scene, I can mask gradients and soft blotches of “paint” that overlay the image behind the characters (or have it affect just the characters) and allow me a second level of control. Not too shabby eh? Also, since the room is so large, I decided it might be a good idea to have at least a little distance fog as a final touch.

Kinda weird seeing a non-openGL visual for once…
